TAYplan planner scoops industry UK award

A TAYplan Planner has been selected by her peers for a prestigious professional award. Lorna Shand, 23 from Glenrothes has won an award for outstanding student achievement in the recent UK national Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards. Lorna, who works as a planning officer with TAYplan, impressed tutors at Heriot-Watt University on her MSc in urban and regional planning course with her ability to apply spatial planning theories to working practice and then develop creative and practical solutions.

Lorna Shand, 23 from Glenrothes has received a commendation for outstanding student achievement in the recent UK national Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards.

Lorna, who works as a planning officer with TAYplan, impressed tutors at Heriot-Watt University on her MSc in urban and regional planning course with her ability to apply spatial planning theories to working practice and then develop creative and practical solutions.

She said: "I am delighted to have had my work recognised by the RTPI, particularly at this early stage in my career.

"As the professional body, recognition from the RTPI for an area of work that I have a particular interest in was especially welcome."

In their commendation judges described Lorna's submission as: "A clearly written, interesting project in which she met the criteria to a good standard, reflected on her practice and engaged colleagues."

After graduating from Edinburgh University with an MA (Hons) in Geography in Summer 2009, Lorna went on to successfully study for her MSc, graduating in Autumn last year.

She worked with TAYplan in Dundee on a short-term summer contract during 2009, returning as a planning officer in May 2010.

TAYplan, the Strategic Development Planning Authority, was set up in 2008 to create a strategy for the location of major development in Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross and North Fife.
